Have You Taken Your Vacation Yet?

Hey Loves,

Let me ask you something… when was the last time you took a real vacation?
Not a “working from my laptop in a different location” trip… not a weekend where you were still answering emails… I mean a real break.

If you’re a small business owner, chances are the answer is not recently.
And trust me, I get it. When you run your own business, it can feel like everything depends on you. If you step away, things might stop. Clients might need you. Deadlines might pop up. And if you’re a one-woman show like many of us, there’s nobody else to mind the store.

But here’s the truth
Not taking time off will cost you more than taking it.

Burnout is real (and it sneaks up fast)

When you never step away, your frustration starts to build.
You love what you do… but suddenly it feels heavy.
Your work/life balance starts to feel nonexistent.
You get tired, overwhelmed, and before you know it, you’re wondering why you’re working so hard in the first place.

That’s burnout, and it happens to the best of us.

Time off actually makes you more productive

This part surprises people, but it’s true.
Studies show that when you take real time off, your productivity goes up when you come back. Your mind is clearer. Your creativity comes back. Your patience comes back too (and your clients will thank you for that 😅).

Rest isn’t laziness.
Rest is maintenance.

And just like your computer needs to reboot sometimes… so do you.

The secret is planning it on purpose

Vacations don’t just happen when you’re a business owner.
You have to schedule them like you schedule everything else.

At the beginning of the year, I block off time on my calendar for breaks, trips, and days where I am not available.
Once those dates are there, they become non-negotiable.

That means:

  • No major deadlines right before
  • No overbooking clients
  • No saying yes to everything
  • No feeling guilty for resting

When you plan ahead, your business can run without chaos, and your clients know what to expect.

Set your boundaries before you leave

Everybody vacations differently.

Some people like to check email once a day.
Some people take calls if it’s urgent.
Some people work a little and relax a lot.

And then there are people like me…
When I’m off, I want to be OFF.

If I’m answering messages the whole time, it doesn’t feel like a break.
It feels like I just changed locations.

So if you do plan to stay connected, make rules for yourself:

  • Only check email at a certain time
  • Only respond to real emergencies
  • No new projects while you’re away

And if you know you can’t resist checking… then don’t check at all. Protect your peace.

Your business will survive. You need to make sure YOU do too.

We work hard.
We carry a lot.
We show up for everyone else every single day.

Taking time off isn’t a luxury.
It’s part of being able to keep going.

So this is your sign to open that calendar, block off some time, set your out-of-office message, and actually step away.

You’ll come back clearer, calmer, and ready to move your business forward without feeling like you’re running on empty.

And honestly… you deserve that.
