Why & How To Choose A Word For Your Year

Hey Loves,

Every year around this time, it seems like everybody is picking a “Word of the Year.” And I’m not gonna lie… for a while, I resisted it too. Part of me didn’t want to do something just because everyone else was doing it. But the year I finally chose one? It changed more than I expected — in my life and in my business.

One year my word was Possibilities, and I found myself coming back to that word over and over again. When things felt stuck, I asked, What’s possible here? When I felt overwhelmed, I reminded myself there was more than one way to make something work. That one word kept me focused, motivated, and moving forward even when the year got hard.

Now some years the word comes easy… and some years it doesn’t. I’ve had years where I debated between words like Slay, Accomplish, Grow, or Balance, because they all fit where I was in life at the time.

And that’s the whole point.

If you’re a business owner, your brain is probably full 24/7.
Ideas, tasks, deadlines, goals, clients, family, life… all of it.

Choosing one word gives you a center point.
Something you can come back to when everything feels scattered.

Your word becomes a filter for your decisions.
It helps you ask:
👉 Does this move me closer to what I want this year?
👉 Does this match the life I’m trying to build?
👉 Does this align with my goals for my business?

Having one focus word keeps you grounded when everything else feels like noise.

You don’t need anything fancy. Grab a notebook, your planner, your phone notes, or open a document on your computer. You already know I’m a big fan of writing things down — it helps you organize your thoughts, and you’re way more likely to follow through when you see it in front of you.

Start by making a list of what you want this year.

Do you want to be more organized?
Make more money?
Work less but smarter?
Grow your business?
Rest more?
Say no more often?
Show up more confidently?

Look at your list and see what theme shows up.

If everything points to getting your life together → maybe your word is Simplify.
If your focus is money, growth, or opportunities → maybe Increase or Abundance.
If you want to stop playing small, maybe try Bold, Fearless, or Elevate.
If you want to get things DONE, maybe Execute, Finish, or Accomplish.

Sometimes the right word just feels right.
When a word keeps popping up in your mind… pay attention to it.

Picking the word is the easy part. Staying focused on it is where the magic happens.

Here are a few ways to keep your word in front of you:

  • Make it your phone lock screen
  • Put it on a sticky note on your desk
  • Add it to your planner or journal
  • Create a graphic in Canva and print it
  • Use it as a reminder before you make decisions
  • Ask yourself often: Does this match my word?

Your word isn’t just something cute for January.
It’s something you carry with you all year — in your life and in your business.

So now I want to know…

XOXO,
